Chalfont Park Canoe Club

About the Club

Chalfont Park Canoe Club was founded in 1952 by members of the canoe club of a research establishment at Chalfont Park, Buckinghamshire. Our home now, as it has been since 1953, is below Hambleden Weir, near Henley-on-Thames.

At the moment the membership list has approximately sixty names on it, the prime interest of these members being White Water canoeing in both Kayaks and Canoes.
Prospective club members are welcome to use the club facilities before joining

Although primarily a Whitewater club there has also been a strong interest in Slalom, Marathon and Long distance racing with some notable results in the Devizes to Westminster race. For many years we provided at least one member of the British team from our number and we are very pleased that we had the once World Champion, Paul Farrant as a very active member until his tragic death.

Club members have also organised and taken part in major expeditions all over the World. Pakistan, Chile, Costa Rica The Grand Canyon, Austria, The French Alps and British Columbia have all been the destination for expeditions.

Social events are held during the year including an Annual dinner. An Annual General Meeting is held at which important club matters are discussed and decisions taken by the club. The day-to-day running of the club is managed by a Committee, elected each year at the A.G.M.

Club members are drawn from all over the south of England, main centers of membership being Greater London, Henley and Reading; with some as far away as Bristol and Northants.

A season’s paddling could take you from London to Scotland, North Wales or the Lake District, or you might not leave the Thames at all.

The Club is noted for it's friendliness and willingness of the members to assist any paddlers, or to further the sport of canoeing in this country.

The Club meets on Sunday mornings throughout the year from about 10.30, and also on a Wednesday evening from 18.00 throughout the summer. Club members are free to use the facilities at any time.

2002 was the Club's 50th year and we are looking forward to the next 50 years being as successful as the first.

Chalfont Park Canoe Club is unique in having had two Olympic C1 paddlers and the first British Slalom World Champion.

Organised Club days are Sundays throughout the year and Wednesday evenings during the summer.
Club members are also free to use the facilities at any time.

Weir.

Since the E.A. work in 2002 to install underwater ramps just below the main sluices this section once again has excellent whitewater for canoeing.  The radial sluices still continue to provide white-water suitable for Slalom training or play boating.

LD.

The club has three "time trial" circuits that are used for training

  1. "The Island" - from the club to Culham Court island and back. 2.1 Miles - Approx 20 minutes.
  2. "The Abbey" - from the club to Medmenham abbey and back. 3.6 Miles - Approx 40 minutes.
  3. "Hurley" - from the club to Hurley weir and back. 5.6 miles - Approx 60 minutes.

Recreational.

The club is ideally situated for all types of recreational paddling.

The club has a long history of which we are very proud, read the notable events here.
